Undergoing breast enhancement surgery, or receiving breast implants, is a big decision. There are a variety of factors to consider and it is important for women to be aware of all their options. Dr. Paul Leahy helps his patients understand the difference between saline implants, silicone gel implants, and the new IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implants.

The Risk of Rupture

In the video above, Dr. Paul Leahy discusses the advantages of the IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implant. He first explains what happens if a breast implant ruptures. When silicone gel implants leak, the sticky silicone gel gets stuck to the surrounding body tissue. This is known as a “silent rupture” since it can only be detected by an MRI. The FDA recommends that women with silicone gel implants receive an MRI every other year to determine whether their implants are intact. An MRI is not required to detect rupture in saline implants or the IDEAL IMPLANT. Rather, women can know their implants are intact by simply looking in the mirror. In case of rupture, the body easily and safely absorbs the saline.

The Internal Structure of the IDEAL IMPLANT

Breast implants come in all shapes and sizes. Dr. Paul Leahy further explains how IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implants utilize a unique design to offer both the benefits of silicone gel and the safety of saline. The IDEAL IMPLANT is comprised of a series of shells that hold two separate chambers of saline. This advanced internal structure is designed to:

  • Help control the movement of the saline and eliminate sloshing, known as the “water-hammer” effect
  • Reduce wrinkling and rippling
  • Produce a youthful look with a realistic feel
  • Allow for a smaller incision scar than with silicone gel implants
  • Give support to the upper pole to prevent collapse when upright
  • Provide surgeons the ability to adjust volume based on patient preferences

Additionally in the video, you can learn more about the rate of “capsular contracture” that occurs with the IDEAL IMPLANT.
