With one of the most reputable plastic surgery facilities along the east coast, Dr. Barber strives to provide the latest in surgical and non-surgical procedures designed to help men and women achieve their physical goals. Specializing in procedures for the face, body, and breast, Dr. Barber was recently recognized as an Ideal Implant Preferred Surgeon due to his extensive expertise working with IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implants, a new development in breast augmentation technology. These saline-filled implants have outperformed silicone breast implants time and time again with their unique design and beautiful features.
The IDEAL IMPLANT: Designed for Peace of Mind
Currently, when a woman goes in for a breast augmentation, she can choose from three different types of implants available on the market today: silicone gel breast implants, unstructured saline implants, and the new structured IDEAL IMPLANT.
When you look at these implants side-by-side, you’ll probably notice that the silicone gel implants and IDEAL IMPLANT tend to have a similar look and feel; both mimic breast tissue very well. However, there are some benefits and compromises associated with these implants that cannot be observed at first glance. For example, silicone gel implants may look and feel natural, but the sticky, silicone gel inside is not natural to your body. If the implant tears (known as a rupture) that gel can come into contact with your body tissues, leading to complications such as capsular contracture.
The IDEAL IMPLANT is filled with a sterile saline solution which is just a mixture of salt and water. If an IDEAL IMPLANT ruptures, that solution will simply be absorbed into your body without any adverse side effects. In a 2017 Independent Survey, “Women’s Preferences in Breast Implants,” 91% of women reported that . . . they would prefer saline coming into contact with their tissue in case of rupture over silicone gel, including 73% of women who already had silicone breast implants.
Along with the safety of saline, the IDEAL IMPLANT also allows you to detect a rupture just by looking in the mirror. This is not the case with silicone gel implants, where ruptures can only be detected with an MRI or an ultrasound. Current recommendations from the FDA state that women with silicone gel breast implants should get an MRI or ultrasound every two-to-three years to check for ruptures. These MRIs are almost never covered by insurance, since breast augmentation is considered a cosmetic surgery.
With both a lower rate of rupture and capsular contracture for primary breast augmentation at 8-years post-operatively when compared to silicone gel-filled implants, the IDEAL IMPLANT gives women the peace of mind they want while also delivering a beautiful shape and result.
What About Textured Silicone Breast Implants?
You may already know that different breast implants come in varying shapes and sizes, but did you also know there’s a difference between textured and smooth implants? Textured implants tend to have a feel similar to Velcro, while smooth implants are smooth and fluid to the touch. In July 2019, Allergan Corporation voluntarily recalled all textured silicone gel implants due to the increasing evidence that this particular implant made by Allergan is associated with a rare form of cancer called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma.
Dr. Barber has utilized very few Allergan implant products throughout his career and primarily uses other silicone gel brands. Most of these implants are smooth, not textured, implants. Dr. Barber says, “In addition to these well established brands, the Barber Center is excited to now offer a revolutionary new type of structured breast implant . . . the IDEAL IMPLANT.” If you choose the IDEAL IMPLANT for your breast augmentation, you’ll notice that it is designed with a smooth surface.
What to Expect at Your Consultation
Dr. Barber says,“I run a very patient-centric office. The patient is always number one in my employees’ mind and in my mind.”
Dr. Barber believes you should be fully informed and educated before making any decisions regarding a cosmetic procedure. When you book a private consultation, Dr. Barber will go over all your options for breast augmentation (silicone breast implants, unstructured saline implants, and the new structured IDEAL IMPLANT) and listen attentively to your individual needs and goals. In order to picture your new breast size, Dr. Barber uses Vectra 3D Imaging technology, which projects a three dimensional simulation showing you what to expect from various implant sizes. When scheduling your procedure, you will receive the ultimate in confidentiality and scheduling flexibility with Dr. Barber’s state-of-the-art surgical facility onsite.
