Ideal Implant Incorporated is a privately held company that was founded in 2006 by Robert S. Hamas, MD, the plastic surgeon who invented the IDEAL IMPLANT. After years of dealing with ruptured silicone gel implants and listening to patient concerns, Dr. Hamas realized that women wanted a new type of breast implant – one that would combine the natural feel of a silicone gel implant with only saline inside for safety and peace of mind.
Almost 10 years were spent developing and refining the IDEAL IMPLANT, conducting the US clinical trial with 502 women, and submitting volumes of safety, manufacturing and clinical data to FDA and Health Canada for approval. The Company has been fortunate to have the help of a dedicated team of scientists, engineers, and consultants. In addition, many plastic surgeons contributed clinical expertise to this project, because they recognized that the IDEAL IMPLANT would solve a concern their patients had and they wanted to be able to offer those patients a solution.
Over the years, a number of plastic surgeons chose to become stockholders in the Company because they believed in the IDEAL IMPLANT and the difference it could make for patients. Today, Ideal Implant Incorporated is majority owned by plastic surgeons, making it the “Plastic Surgeons’ Breast Implant Company.” Because of this, the Company has a strong focus on patient care and safety, with particular emphasis on attention to detail and quality control in manufacturing of the IDEAL IMPLANT. For example, some clinical trial implants made in 2009 at the trial manufacturing site in Montana deflated due to an assembly defect. This was corrected with improved process controls and inspections, along with moving manufacturing to a California company with a comprehensive quality control system and more than 30 years of experience manufacturing silicone medical devices.
In the US, the IDEAL IMPLANT is only available through a Network of board certified or board-eligible plastic surgeons. In the future, manufacturing capacity will expand to allow additional plastic surgeons to be added to the Network throughout the US and Canada, as well as internationally.
