Breast enhancement surgery continues to be the most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States. There are thousands of plastic surgeons in the U.S. who offer breast augmentation, and it can be tough to know who to pick for your procedure. Most patients want a surgeon who is experienced, qualified, and can help them achieve the look they want. At Dr. Ellen Mahony’s office in Westport, CT, patients find all that and more. Not only is Dr. Mahony exceptionally qualified, she is compassionate, understanding, and truly cares about each and every one of her patients. One patient of Dr. Mahony’s was willing to share her breast augmentation experience with us in hopes that it will help other women understand the process. This patient chose IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implants for her enhancement procedure and is exceptionally pleased with her results.
“I started thinking about a breast augmentation when I was 19. I was fascinated by the idea of plastic surgery. A good friend of my mom had the surgery done, so I was able to talk to her about it. One of the things that she said to me was, “I love them. It was the best thing I’ve done, but I think you’re a little too young. You may want to wait until you get into a time in your life in which you know that that’s exactly what you want.” Fast forward years later, I’m in my forties now and I’m glad at that time I didn’t do it because my weight went up and down so many times. About six years ago, I started losing weight, and it was a constant up-and-down battle. In 2015, I was part of a test group diet that helped me customize a diet for my specific needs, and I lost a lot of weight.
“I was doing more of a medium-fat, low carb diet, more of a ketogenic diet, and I noticed that my breasts went with the weight. When I started losing weight, I was a 38D, and when I went to Dr. Mahony, I think I was barely a 34B. I had lost a lot of weight, and then I think also because I’m already in my forties and perimenopausal that I lost the fullness on top of my breast. You don’t realize how your breast tissue changes over time. Although I was doing a healthy diet and I lost weight, it wasn’t that I lost a lot of weight; I lost a lot of body fat. Your breast is just basically fat tissue. A lot of women, especially as we get into our forties, our hormones start changing, your body does a complete 180 sometimes. That’s when I decided that it was now or never. I was referred to Dr. Mahony by one of the managers at Victoria’s Secret. When I went into her office, I knew immediately that I wanted her to be my doctor and that I was going to go forward with it.”
What was it about Dr. Mahony that led you to select her as your plastic surgeon?
“She’s a woman. Not that there’s anything wrong with men, but I think for me, men care more about your size. I wanted to remain as normal as possible. I wanted to go as big as possible but remain natural. Just going there and the atmosphere at her office made me feel very welcomed, very relaxed. When I talked to her, it was an amazing experience. She also has implants, so if I had any questions, I would be talking to somebody that already went through the experience, and who better than your plastic surgeon to really talk to and get your questions answered? That’s why I chose her.”
Why did you pick the IDEAL IMPLANT for your breast augmentation over the other types of breast implants on the market today?
“I always wanted saline, and it’s because I’m a health freak. I like to do things the natural way. I eat very healthily. Sometimes the internet is your worst enemy because when I started to research, there was just so much information out there and it can be really confusing. I started looking online and everything that I saw was mainly for silicone gel implants. There was very little information about saline implants. When I went to Dr. Mahony, I said, “You know what? She‘s the one that has the most experience, and I’m pretty sure we’re just going to come to an agreement as to what implant would be the best for me.
“There were several things that turned me off about silicone gel. One of those things was the fact that you have to get an MRI every two years or so to check for silent rupture, and your insurance company does not cover that. After talking to Dr. Mahony, I started researching silicone gel implants, and I could not find any clear research that stated what really happened to the tissue inside your body if the implant ruptured. I just started thinking to myself, “Gel is very gummy, so what is going to happen to your breasts on the inside?” I couldn’t find anything that really told me that it was as safe as it could be. Both of those things turned me off of silicone gel implants.
“In my consultation with Dr. Mahony, she basically put two implants out in front of me and covered them with a towel and asked me to feel both. Without knowing, I chose the IDEAL IMPLANT as the one that felt best to me. When Dr. Mahony told me it was a saline implant, I was like, “This is the one that I want.” It feels like a silicone gel implant, but I don’t have to worry about silent rupture. With the IDEAL IMPLANT, I have peace of mind knowing that my body is going to absorb the saline and I don’t have to rush to make an appointment. I can contact Dr. Mahony, we can schedule surgery to get the implant replaced, but meanwhile, while it’s leaking, I want to make sure that my health is going to stay intact. That was the reason why I chose the IDEAL IMPLANT.”
How long has it been since your procedure, and how are you feeling now?
“My procedure was February 5th, so it’s been almost a year. I feel fantastic! I don’t regret my decision for a minute; I love it. I love my implants. It just gave me the reassurance that I needed. I look very natural. If I didn’t tell my close friends that I have implants, they would’ve never known. They’re very natural, and I love them. I love the feel of them.”
How did you decide what size you wanted your breast implants to be? What was that process like?
“I knew I wanted natural-looking implants, but then a lot of women said, “Go as big as you can because there’s going to come a point in which you wish you were bigger.” I’m in a relationship, and my boyfriend, he right off the bat was like, “400 ccs.” I’m like, “400, okay, whatever.” When I went to Dr. Mahony, that’s what I told her. She smiled and she said to me, “I’m going to show you why 400 ccs is not going to work, because you’re very tiny. Your chest measurements are really tiny, and that’s not going to work.” When she took a 400 implant and she had me try it on, it literally went halfway through my chest. I was like, “Oh, okay.” Visual-wise, I came to the realization that, “Okay, that’s fine.” We chose 350 implants, and we got to the agreement that when I was in the operating room, she would overfill the implant to a point that it didn’t feel hard; it was still normal, but safe for me.
“Surgery day, we had agreed that she was going to go as big as possible, and she did. I have a 350 implant; on my left, I have it overfilled to 380, and on my right, it’s 370. I’m almost at the 400, and I love them. I mean, I always tell people that what is instrumental when you’re going to get plastic surgery is the implant you choose, but also the doctor and how confident you are with the experience that the doctor has in taking care of you. Dr. Mahony and the IDEAL IMPLANT fulfilled that 100%.”
Many patients praise Dr. Mahony, her office, and her staff for the way in which they treat their patients. How was your experience?
“After seeing Dr. Mahony, one of the things that I was sent to do was a mammogram. When I went in, they found calcifications in my left breast. They actually ended up extracting some of the calcifications to test it. I had to go talk to a cancer specialist and everything, and Dr. Mahony’s office was very caring and instrumental in my health. They told me to call them any time I had questions, because I was a nervous wreck. I was like, “Okay, I’m going to get this done and now this happens. What in the world?” They were there to answer my questions. I had all of my tests sent to Dr. Mahony; she herself looked at her tests and actually told me, “Don’t worry about it.” Three months after that, I got the okay to get the surgery done.”
What advice would you give women who are also considering breast augmentation?
“I would tell them to shop around for the right plastic surgeon. You need to feel comfortable with who you’re talking to, and to make sure your needs are met. We’re all different; we’re all put together different, our bodies are all different, even though we have the same organs. Structure-wise, we’re different. You need to find a plastic surgeon that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
“Before you even decide on an implant, feel them. Do your research. One of the things that I’ll forever be grateful to Dr. Mahony for is that she never said, “You should do this,” or, “You should do that.” She just put both implants there and she let me decide. For example, the silicone gel implants. You need that MRI. For me, I didn’t have the money to get an MRI every two years. I’ve been unemployed since 2016, and I’m actually doing a master’s so I’m going back to school. I was like, “No, that’s not going to be it for me.”
How satisfied are you with the IDEAL IMPLANT?
“I’m so glad for the IDEAL IMPLANT. I’m so glad that they feel just like gel, but they’re saline. Every woman should do her research to decide what she wants. But whatever you decide, that’s your decision. Don’t let anybody influence you. Two of my friends actually have gel, and they’re like, “No, you’re going to hate your implants. Gel feels so much more natural.” At the end of the day, I was like, “You know, I’m grateful for your information, but this is my surgery. This is my body, and I’m going to decide what is best for me.” One of my friends is actually due for a breast revision, and she has decided that she now wants IDEAL IMPLANTs as well. Saline implants have come a long way from when I started researching them back when I was 19, and now you have something out there that feels just like gel. The IDEAL IMPLANT is natural, and it’s a lot better for your body. Plus, your incision is not as big as it would be with a gel implant. The incision is a lot smaller, you can cover it a lot better, and you have the best of both worlds: feels like gel, yet they’re saline and they’re natural, and they’re good for you.”
