Breast augmentation is the number one cosmetic surgical procedure in the U.S. But out of the 300,000 women who get implants every year, more t have come forward claiming their implants are the source of illnesses, even cancer. NBC 5 News in DFW recently interviewed Dr. Robert Hamas, the inventor of the latest in breast implant technology, the IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implant, as well as Heather Jordan, a patient who, after years of research, chose to receive the IDEAL IMPLANT over her other options—silicone gel and saline.
Dr. Hamas caught national attention when he spoke at an FDA hearing about breast implant safety in March, 2019. The longtime Dallas surgeon was at the height of his career in the 90’s when the federal government pulled silicone breast implants off the market citing concerns about their safety. “The patients were very very frightened about what was in their body,” said Dr. Hamas. He knew that he had to do something to create more options for women.
Safety Risks of Silicone Breast Implants
Not only were patients concerned about their implants causing illnesses, but they were also worried about possible silent rupture, a break in silicone breast implants that you can’t detect until symptoms show, and symptoms may not show for years. This could lead to silicone gel leaking into your body tissues and creating complications and the need for extensive future surgeries in order to remove the gel and replace the implants. Because there is no way to detect a silent rupture right away, the FDA recommends that women with silicone breast implants get an MRI every two years to make sure their implants are still intact. MRI’s are often costly and not covered by insurance, meaning additional out-of-pocket expenses for these women for the rest of their lives. Silicone breast implants were allowed back on the market in 2006, but by then, Dr. Hamas had created a new kind of implant, The IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implant.
The IDEAL IMPLANT
“It gives women a third choice, with many of the safety features of saline, which they like for peace of mind, but it also gives them the natural feel and the performance much like a silicone breast implant.” – Dr. Hamas
The now FDA-approved IDEAL IMPLANT is a structured implant designed to look and feel like a silicone breast implant with a saline filling instead of silicone gel. It is in its fourth year on the market and is being offered by plastic surgeons all over the nation. Now that women have three options, they can better customize their implant to the look and feel they want and have peace of mind knowing exactly what they are putting into their bodies and the amount of risk involved. Through the research and innovative design by Dr. Hamas, women now have three options for their breast augmentation. They can know exactly what risks are involved with what they put into their bodies and experience peace of mind and total bodily autonomy.
“I think it was important for me to convey the message that women want choices of implants.” – Dr. Hamas
Breast Augmentation Options
Before the IDEAL IMPLANT, women only had two choices: silicone breast implants or unstructured saline breast implants. Silicone gel implants were a popular choice because of their natural look and feel. Saline implants were chosen because of the peace of mind they provided. If a saline implant ruptures, the saline solution is absorbed, causing no harm to the body and allowing for instant rupture detection by the patient. The only problem with unstructured saline implants is they tend to wrinkle and ripple, feeling and looking more like water balloons than natural breasts. Women loved the peace of mind of saline but were missing the natural look and feel of silicone breast implants.
Dr. Constance Barone, a renowned, board certified plastic surgeon with a busy practice in San Antonio, Texas, and an Ideal Implant Premier Surgeon, expresses her thoughts on the latest in implant technology, the IDEAL IMPLANT. “I show patients every type of implant available. I show them saline. I show them silicone. And I show them the IDEAL IMPLANT. They get to feel and see each of their options, and almost exclusively these days, they pick the IDEAL IMPLANT [for their breast augmentation].”
IDEAL IMPLANT 8-Year Study
The unique design of the IDEAL IMPLANT provides a natural feel and youthful look—without using silicone gel. The IDEAL IMPLANT incorporates a series of shells nested together and two separate chambers that hold saline. Made with standard implant materials, the IDEAL IMPLANT uses an advanced internal structure to control movement of the saline and support the implant edges to reduce collapse and wrinkling. The IDEAL IMPLANT has undergone ten years of development, testing, and refinement—including contributions of clinical expertise from several board-certified plastic surgeons. The IDEAL IMPLANT was approved by both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada in 2014. The findings below were discovered in an eight-year study comparing the rupture and capsular contracture risk rates between the IDEAL IMPLANT and three types of silicone breast implants.
“The IDEAL IMPLANT Structured Breast Implant has the best safety profile out there right now,” reports Dr. Ellen Mahony. “It’s pretty amazing that this particular implant has the lowest capsular contracture rate and the lowest leak rate of all of its competitors, yet offers a similar natural look and feel for which silicone gel implants are known. Women don’t have anxiety about potential silent rupture or wondering whether the implant is intact. It’s truly an ideal option for the majority of my breast augmentation patients.”
Why Women Choose the IDEAL IMPLANT
The data clearly shows that IDEAL IMPLANT has a substantially lower risk of major complications compared to silicone breast implants. The more women that choose the IDEAL IMPLANT, the less risk is out there of a “silent rupture,” or even greater complications in the future. Because of its smooth surface, the IDEAL IMPLANT also eliminates the recent concern over cancer risks associated with textured-surfaced implants.
“Recent surveys have clearly shown that the majority of women have very real concerns about silicone gel in their bodies and the risk of silent rupture,” reports Dr. Vivian Ting, a board-certified Ideal Implant Preferred Surgeon in California who presented the survey data above at the ASPS Aesthetica Super Symposium. “Surgeons may underestimate this anxiety simply because they don’t share the concern, in great part because about 90% are male. A woman’s anxiety about what is in her body is a critical part of the full treatment picture.”
IDEAL IMPLANT Protection Plan
The IDEAL IMPLANT Structured Breast Implant began FDA clinical trials in 2009, and received FDA and Health Canada approval for public use in 2014. The company also offers a first-of-its kind optional Premium Protection Plan which provides limited financial protection for certain complications related to the procedure and/or the implant, and is renewable for life for greater peace of mind.

A Real Patient’s Breast Augmentation Experience
Dr. Hamas presented his IDEAL IMPLANT to the FDA along with the message that women want more options. He hopes his message will further empower women like Heather Jordan, a patient who chose the IDEAL IMPLANT after looking at her other options. She spent a year and a half researching breast augmentations before choosing to go under the knife two years ago.
“I missed that whole, for lack of a better term, sex appeal, or feeling sexy as a woman instead of just feeling like a mother.” – Heather Jordan
When asked about whether she was worried about putting something foreign into her body and the risks involved, Heather responded, “Definitely. You’re putting something in your body, so you should definitely know what you’re getting into.” With more options and innovative technology comes more information and awareness. Women have the ability to become completely informed about their breast augmentation choices and know exactly what they are putting into their bodies and what they can expect. Happy with her choice of the IDEAL IMPLANT two years later, Heather Jordan can confidently say she feels sexy again with her natural looking implants along with her peace of mind.
The Future of the IDEAL IMPLANT
Dr. Hamas hopes to continue to educate women and surgeons that there are more than two breast implant options. The third option, the IDEAL IMPLANT, doesn’t require regular MRI’s that are often an out-of-pocket expense, and the risk of rupture and capsular contracture is significantly lower for primary augmentation than with silicone breast implants. Now women can truly have it all with implants that provide a natural look and feel along with complete peace of mind.
“When I started practicing, the surgeon made the decision-the women didn’t have many sources of information. Today there’s a huge amount of information on websites and through social media…Times have really changed and women expect, and they should, to be able to make their own decisions and get unbiased information.” – Dr. Hamas
When considering breast augmentation, women want a beautiful, natural, and safe result that doesn’t leave them wondering whether their implant has ruptured silently. The IDEAL IMPLANT Structured Breast Implant is the latest implant technology designed by a plastic surgeon, Dr. Hamas, to give women the best of both worlds—the beautiful look and natural feel they want, with the safety of only saline inside.
Long Island board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christine Blaine reports, “Once patients have the ability to feel the difference between silicone gel, unstructured saline, and IDEAL IMPLANT, they’re more comfortable with the idea of the structured implant because of the way the IDEAL IMPLANT feels—they feel that it’s soft, it’s more natural. The overall satisfaction rate with the patients that have had the IDEAL IMPLANT placed is great. They love the idea of a safe implant. They love the idea of no silent rupture, no MRIs or monitoring, and the lack of concern for higher complication rates.”
The “Plastic Surgeons’ Breast Implant Company
Since the IDEAL IMPLANT has been on the market, it has changed both patient and surgeon’s views of breast augmentation surgery significantly. Over the years, a number of plastic surgeons have chosen to become stockholders in the company because they believed in the IDEAL IMPLANT and the difference it could make for patients and for their personal practices. Today, Ideal Implant Incorporated is majority owned by plastic surgeons, making it the “Plastic Surgeons’ Breast Implant Company.”
Because of this, the company has a strong focus on patient care and safety, with particular emphasis on attention to detail and quality control in manufacturing of the IDEAL IMPLANT. IDEAL IMPLANT Premier plastic surgeons are surgeons who not only offer the IDEAL IMPLANT but also have extensive experience in performing hundreds of successful breast augmentations using this implant. We have continually improved process controls and inspections in our FDA-approved US manufacturing facility and the implant has demonstrated very low failure rates in comparison to other implants.
In the US, the IDEAL IMPLANT is only available through a Network of board certified or board-eligible plastic surgeons. The implant is also approved for use in Canada. Considering breast augmentation in your area? Go to our convenient Surgeon Finder to locate the surgeon closest to you.
