Saline vs. Silicone Gel Breast Implants

Many women don’t know the difference between all the types of breast implant options available for breast augmentation. It’s important to know what makes each implant distinctive so you can choose the one that’s right for your body.

Silicone gel implants: Just like its name states, these implants are filled with silicone gel, and have been around the longest. The silicone-gel feels very similar to breast tissue. These implants carry a higher rate of rupture and require MRI scans every two years to detect a leak.

Traditional saline implants: These implants are filled with salt water which can be absorbed easily by the body without harmful effects. However, traditional saline implants have no structure inside, so they tend to ripple and give the breast an abnormal shape.

After completing medical school, Dr. Gelfant was the Chief of plastic surgery at Maricopa County Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, from 1988-1989. He opened his clinical practice in Vancouver, BC, in 1989. He is a member of numerous professional organizations including the Canadian Society for Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Plastic Surgery (CSAPS) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). He served as the past president of the British Columbia Medical Association Section of Plastic Surgery and is the author of Cosmetic Surgery: A Patient’s Guide published in 1997.
