IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implants are a new breast enhancement option for women seeking the natural look and youthful projection of silicone implants in Grand Rapids, but want the peace of mind that comes with a saline implant. In a recent interview, Dr. Steven Ringler of the Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery explained why he offers this new technology-driven implant choice.

Describe your Grand Rapids practice and what experience you have with IDEAL IMPLANT Structured Breast Implants.

“I’m a board-certified plastic surgeon. I’ve been in Grand Rapids for 35 years. Right now, my practice focuses primarily on cosmetic surgery, divided equally between facial cosmetic, breast, and body contouring. Several years ago the IDEAL IMPLANT became available on the market. I have started using that in my practice. The IDEAL IMPLANT is a saline-filled implant. Many patients find that to be a really good option for them as opposed to a silicone gel implant. Because of the large number of patients that I treat with this implant, I am now considered an Ideal Implant Premier Surgeon.”

What makes IDEAL IMPLANTS different from saline or silicone implants in Grand Rapids? Why do you like IDEAL IMPLANT Structured Breast Implants? Why are they known as “structured implants”?

“It’s very rewarding for me to be able to treat patients and help them achieve their aesthetic goals. I think the IDEAL IMPLANT has probably been the biggest advancement in technology for implants in my career. I am very excited about the IDEAL IMPLANT. I was an early adopter, as soon as it became commercially available, and have been very, very pleased with the results I’m seeing and so are my patients … It has an inner chamber, which is filled from a small valve on the back, and an outer chamber in front, and in between there are baffle shells, which give the implant its structure. So even when the implant is in a patient and it’s on a curved chest wall, it maintains its shape and its projection. In my experience, it’s given a really nice cosmetic shape to the breast, which I think is even better than what we would see in the past with some of the other implants available … If you look online, as you say, the reviews for the IDEAL IMPLANT are really, really good and have very positive feedback.”

Who is a good candidate to receive IDEAL IMPLANTS?

“I see a lot of women who are coming in specifically for IDEAL IMPLANTS because they’re educated and they’ve read about it and they’re excited about this new technology. But I see patients that never had much breast development or they have lost volume following pregnancy, which is probably the most common thing, and they just want to restore their natural shape and get back to where they were before.”

Explain your consultation process for women pursuing a breast enhancement.

“When I see patients in the office, of course we go through a consultation process. We talk about the implant. I show them different implants. We talk about the various risks. We do computer imaging, 3-D imaging, and then we also offer sizers, which is an insert the patient can put in their bra to get an idea of what the volume might look like after surgery. This is typically an outpatient surgery that takes about an hour— plus they are at the surgery center an hour before and an hour after.”

What risks are associated with breast enhancement surgery?

“With all implants, there are some risks that come with it. The main risk with implants is either rupture, or leakage, or what’s called a capsular contracture … The IDEAL IMPLANT has a lower rate of rupture than the silicone gel implants that are on the market, and it also has a lower rate of capsular contracture.”

What happens if a breast implant begins to leak? What can women expect if their silicone implants in Grand Rapids rupture compared to a saline or IDEAL IMPLANT?

“ The standard silicone gel implant is a silicone outer shell filled with silicone gel. The concern with this implant is if it does leak, it’s more difficult to treat because you have this kind of gooey, sticky silicone that leaks out. Even if it’s contained by the scar tissue around the implant, it’s still a more complex surgery to replace. If the saline or the IDEAL IMPLANT leaks, it’s very easy to replace the implant.”

How can women determine if their implants have ruptured?

“With the silicone gel implant or a gummy bear implant, which is a silicone gel implant, you would need an MRI or an ultrasound to determine if the implant was leaking. With an IDEAL IMPLANT, you simply have to look in the mirror because if the implant leaks, it’s harmless saline solution—salt water—that would be absorbed by your body. So a woman doesn’t need an MRI or an ultrasound to determine if it’s leaking. My patients have been really pleased with both the appearance and the feel of the implants. They get a very high level of satisfaction and also peace of mind because they don’t have to worry about what’s inside the implant.”

Whether they are interested in IDEAL IMPLANTS, saline, or silicone implants in Grand Rapids, why should women choose the Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery?

“Our office offers an extremely warm and inviting and private environment for patients. My staff is great. Patients find it’s more like being at home when they come here, visiting a friend. It’s a non-threatening environment. Patients can get all the information they need in order to decide what’s going to be best for them. We don’t push surgery. We just want to educate patients and want women to be able to make a choice for themselves.”
